Mentoring

All participants in the Bayview Hunters Point Y Rangers program will be recruited for participation in ESC when they reach middle school and all ESC participants recruited for YSC when they enter high school.

YSC graduates from high school will be recruited for the YSF's workforce development programs, Environmental Advocates (a collaboration with the SF Public Utilities Commission) and Roots to Success, which both focus on jobs in sustainable construction and sustainable industry.

The Bayview YMCA Workforce Development Department incorporates wraparound services (including case management, individual coaching, and barrier removal) in order to meet the needs of young people who may have barriers to employment.

Additionally, all teens who have completed the Naturalists-in-Training and YSC programs will be made aware of employment opportunities working in the YSF's outdoor summer day and overnight camps with the goal of hiring at least five (5) candidates from internal YSF programs from the Bayview Hunters Point community each summer.

Individuals will remain a part of the YSF's outreach and recruitment efforts as long as they qualify as transitional-aged youth (up to 26 years of age).

Annual Report Details

Programs may span from one year to multi-year, not to exceed four years. The specific length of the program is contained in the description above.

List of Educational Goals Achieved

2023

All curriculum used by YSF staff follows NGSS standards, including but not limited to: Human Impact on Environment & Biodiversity, Natural Resource Managment & Sustainability. Additionally, Service Learning Opportunities were provided to youth, primarily in removal of non-native plants and trail maintenance.

List of Formed Partnerships

2023

National Park Service: Our continued partnership with the National Park Service has allowed us to bring participants to multiple NPS Sites (Maritime Museum, Muir Woods, Presidio) free of cost, and have provided opportunities for youth to interact with Park Rangers. NPS is not currently offering service-learning opportunities, so we are seeking additional partnerships to build our environmental stewardship opportunities throughout the year. Additionally, we learned that there are bus requirements to go to Muir Woods, which required our team to be creative about transportation solutions. SF Parks & Rec: Parks & Rec were able to bring back Nature Based Service Projects, something that the National Park Service has not been able to do yet. The youth, especially 6-9 year old participants really enjoyed weeding garden beds at Golden Gate Park in SF

Lessons

2023

During the first part of working with the teens, the staff were struggling to get them engaged with the conservation & education work that we were focused on. In order to bridge the gap, our staff began to attend the skate club, and formed connections with the youth that were already comfortable using outdoors as a recreation space, which lead to increased attendance.
