Program Goals

Service Learning/Career Pathway/Leadership Opportunities

Junior Forest Rangers: 30 youth will have the opportunity for summer employment. Every year grantee hires two crew bosses and eight high school students, to provide outreach and collect data at different locations in the Angeles National Forest. Goals are to prevent further degradation of the forest and to reestablish the ecological integrity of the degraded aquatic ecosystems, as well as increase awareness of land use ethics on national forest recreation areas and provide youth with job skills and exposure to future careers in the outdoors.

Youth United Toward Environmental Protection (YUTEP): 90 youth will participate in the leadership development and environmental education year-round program. Youth are empowered to participate in civic engagement opportunities, learn about environmental issues in their community, discuss higher education and become advocates for environmental and social justice on campus and in their community. YUTEP members receive service learning hours for their participation in the program.

UC California Naturalist Class and Certification: 30 residents will participate in this educational component, offered through University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources. This class offers young people a path to become certified California Naturalists, earn college credits and create pathways to careers in environmental stewardship.

Youth United Toward Environmental Protection College Readiness and Educational Development (YUTEP CRED): 90 high school senriors will have the opportunity to participate in YUTEP CRED to prepare them for college by engaging them in various college readiness activities and providing a place to prepare for the social and emotional impacts of college. This program is a 10-week College Readiness development course. The workshops are centered around identifying pathways toward higher education, professional development, college readiness, goal setting and planning, writing workshops and college tours. Each week, office hours will be made available for students to receive one-on-one mentorship and coaching throughout the college application season.

Inspirational Quotes or Testimonials

2024

“I was thrilled to meet others who shared the same passion for protecting the environment through stewardship and education and with a similar multi-lingual and multi-cultural lens as myself. The desert was the perfect setting for community and connection under a big blue sky, surrounded by eons-old geology, creosote, and ocotillo spread across the tilting terrain.” - - Read more about this experience here: https://theabf.org/inspiring-community-and-connection-in-anza-borrego-desert-state-park-environmental-bipoc-campout/

“I loved sleeping outside in a tent and being busy like going on a hike or the beach. This trip has made it really possible for me to connect better with my family and nature.” - Leo Carrillo Camping Trip August

26 out of the 28 participants who went on a hiking trip to Vasquez Rocks Natural Area had never visited the natural area before. We hiked as the sun was setting, and the participants shared their joy at seeing such a beautiful sunset along with the rocks. During our trip, various youth could be overheard talking about how much fun they were having on the hike. I had the opportunity to talk to parents who expressed their gratitude for being able to join the nature trip and shared how important it was for the youth members of their family to be able to gain experiences out in nature.

List of Educational Goals Achieved

2023

Program is still in the planning stages and updates will be submitted in 2024.

2024

Educational Goal #1 - instruction in arts, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that connects nature experiences, or environmental stewardship- was met via Hiking Trips, Coastal Trips, Channels Island Trips and Camping Trips. Educational Goal #3- This goal was met through our Climate Resiliency Workshops, our community leadership programs, and our CA young naturalist training. For our workshops and training, we use a curriculum that is supportive of the California History and Social Science Content Standards, Common Core State Standards, and CA NGSS Performance Expectations. Educational Goal #4 Our CA Naturalist training connects youth to Black, Indigenous, People of Color who work in the outdoor field. We engage youth and their families through our training and workshops, in topics related to climate justice and environmental justice. All of our trips and activities were conducted with healthy food options to encourage and promote healthy habits and lifestyles.

List of Formed Partnerships

2023

Formalized a relationship with National Forest Foundation and Mono Lake Committee. We are planning on taking trips to Mono Lake in the Summer of 2024.

2024

SAMO invited our CA Youth Naturalists to propagate and plant some seeding at their nursery which is growing plants for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing. At the Nursery, their staff shared more about CA Native plants, their relationship and their uses. They also got a chance to learn about outdoor careers and hear directly from staff members on what they do and how they got there. We worked with the TutĨint Youth Program through the Pukuu Cultural Community Services, a local tribal non-profit organization, to develop a wellness focused hiking curriculum for the Red Box hiking trail located across from Haramongna American Indian Cultural center. The hike was focused on engaging families. Black Thumb Farm was supportive in sharing our events with their youth who work at the Farm. LA County Parks and Natural Spaces via the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area and Nature Center we facilitated monthly fireside events.

Lessons

2023

Program is still in the planning stages and updates will be submitted in 2024.

2024

Successful Methods include: Engaging participants with direct, hands-on activities (e.g., nature hikes, citizen science projects) fosters a deeper connection with the environment fostering stewardship and community connections. Collaborating with local service based organizations help to enhance program goals and introduce the community to local knowledge and resources. Focusing on all age programs is effective in building relationships among families, creating long lasting connections to the outdoors and and improving educational engagement in outdoor activities. Lessons Learned: A challenge we encountered was participants confirming their attendance in advance but dropping out on the day of the event, which impacted the logistics and engagement of the program. Solution: To address this, we recommend implementing a reminder system, such as automated emails or texts a day or two before the event, emphasizing the importance of commitment.
