Program Goals

Service Learning/Career Pathway/Leadership Opportunities

25 residents will participate in the City of Long Beach’s Counselor in Training Program (CIT). This program will provide teens with the experience of assisting various park staff in administering a variety of park programs including summer camp, youth sports, and the after school programs. The City also partners with the California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) to provide mentorship opportunities with students attending local colleges or other applicants who wish to further their careers within the recreation field.

15 residents will participate in the City of Long Beach’s Junior Lifeguard Program. This program is divided by age, ages 9-17. Junior Lifeguards is a 6-week program which includes physical conditioning, rescue technique, first aid instruction, ocean ecology, ocean sport and lifeguard competition as well as beach and sport games. Many youth who participate in the Aquatics Programs and Junior Lifeguard Programs are later been hired as Pool or Beach Lifeguards or Aquatics Instructors.

Partnerships

Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services – This partnership role is a mental health professional during outdoor trips / mental health wellness training.

Sowing Seeds of Change – This current partnership with the City will provide expertise with the Community Garden Activity.

Mentoring

The City offers youth opportunities to continue their involvement with something positive. Among those opportunities are an invitation to the annual youth festival, and a potential pipeline to become a recreation leader or Junior Lifeguard.

Annual Report Details

Programs may span from one year to multi-year, not to exceed four years. The specific length of the program is contained in the description above.
